Charge description: Courtney Manuel Medina was sentenced August 18, 2014 to 25 years in prison for his part in two home invasions at The Palms at Cinco Ranch Apartments of Katy. The 24-year-old Houston man was convicted for the Aggravated Robbery of two residents, including a pregnant woman, in neighboring apartments in November 2013. According to Assistant District Attorney Thomas Pfeiffer, Fort Bend County Sheriffs deputies were dispatched to the apartment complex on FM 1093 on November 22, 2013 around one oclock in the afternoon. One victim reported that she was lying in her bed recovering from nausea associated with her pregnancy when she heard a knock at the door. When she did not answer the door, she heard a loud crash. Three men quickly entered the apartment one pointing a black handgun at her. As the woman reached for the phone, she was grabbed and thrown to the floor and threatened with sexual assault if she looked at the mens faces. The victim was then bound with electrical cords while her property was stolen. One suspect attacked the woman in a manner that placed her in fear of an imminent sexual assault. When the suspects exited the apartment, they knocked on the next apartment door. The man inside reported that he answered the door to find no one there. Moments later, he was ordered inside as the armed robbers appeared and forced their way into his home. This victim was also bound with electrical cords as his property was being stolen. Both victims reported to prosecutors that the suspects repeatedly pressed the gun to their heads as they were being threatened. The suspects fled before police arrived and no arrests were made. Less than a month later, Courtney Manuel Medina, an admitted gang member, was arrested on an unrelated charge and confessed to both home invasions. On August 18, 2014, Medina pled guilty to two counts of Aggravated Robbery with a Deadly Weapon and was sentenced to 25 years in each case by 268th District Court Presiding Judge Brady G. Elliott after a punishment hearing. Its dark days when violent men such as these attack a pregnant woman, Pfeiffer stated. But together we stand with our community to condemn the criminal acts that so recklessly endanger our peace. Aggravated Robbery is a first-degree felony punishable by 5 to 99 years or life in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Because a deadly weapon was used to commit the crime, Medina will serve at least one-half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He was probation eligible. Attorney Tom Stickler represented the defendant.
