Comments: | Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but it was not until passage of the community protection act of 1990 (which mandates sex offender registration) that law enforcement even knew where they were living. In many cases, law enforcement is not able to share that information with you. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders will not be tolerated. Further, such abuse could potentially end law enforcement's ability to do community notifications. We believe the only person who wins if community notification ends is the sex offender, since sex offenders drive their power through secrecy. According to official documents, Schardt was found guilty by jury verdict on November 23, 1998 of the crime of Rape of a Child in the 1st Degree. He was given a term of 204 months in prison. Between April of 1996 and April of 1997 Schardt had sexual intercourse with the 10 to 11 year old female. Schardt had lived in the home under a year. Schardt sexually assaulted the victim 5 to 7 times each month. The victim was told not to tell anyone about the sexual abuse or she would regret it. The victim told investigators that she kept the sexual assaults a secret because she was afraid of Schardt. In April of 2007, Schardt was found guilty of an infraction of sexual harassment in which he attempted to gain access to another cell mate. Schardt grabbed his cell mates buttocks while in the day room. He lost 15 days of good time and was transferred to another prison.
