Inmate name: | Eli Corey Williams |
Charge description: | A jury convicted Eli Corey Williams of Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Driving on March 5, 2014 after deliberating for approximately 30 minutes. The 43-year old Richmond man was arrested February 2013 after he sped past a DPS trooper on patrol. According to Assistant District Attorney Grayson Miller, Williams was weaving through traffic while southbound on Highway 59 when he sped past Trooper D. Wiles at more than 20 miles over the speed limit. Once stopped, the defendant was incoherent, smelled of alcohol, and was stumbling at the roadside. He refused a field sobriety evaluation despite the Trooper offering multiple chances to comply. Based upon his driving and several indicators of intoxication, Trooper Wiles arrested Williams for DWI. At that point, the defendant became aggressive and belligerent, berating Trooper Wiles for half an hour. Williams also refused to provide a breath sample resulting in the suspension of his drivers license. Mr. Williams told the trooper he would beat this case and that the prosecutor was going to throw it back in his face, said ADA Miller, but he was just too intoxicated to exercise any good judgment that night. Williams was tried in County Court at Law No. 2 before Presiding Judge Jeffrey A. McMeans. Driving While Intoxicated in this case is a Class B Misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and/or a fine up to $2,000. Reckless Driving is also a Class B Misdemeanor but is limited to a 30-day maximum jail term. The court sentenced Williams to 60 days in the county jail for the DWI and the maximum 30-day term for Reckless Driving as he was not probation eligible. The Court also fined the defendant a total of $1,200 dollars. The sentences will run concurrently. Assistant District Attorneys Grayson Miller and Melissa Giminez prosecuted the case. Attorney Dale Paschall represented the defendant. |
